Course Titles and/or Descriptions
Sexual Orientation and the Law – This course will review how sexual orientation is dealt with in the law, both domestically and internationally. Topics will include how sexual orientation is defined by law, the differences between sexual orientation and gender identity, and the different legal treatment of
lesbians, gays, bisexual individuals, and transgender individuals. In addition, the course will review the present status of the relationships of same-sex partners and compare the existing and proposed rights therein to those of heterosexual marriage. Extensive attention will be paid to civil rights issues, federal and state regulation of sexuality, marriage, and adoption, and the movements to obtain rights equivalent to those afforded individuals who identify as heterosexual. (offered annually).
Advanced Civil Rights Litigation Regarding Sexual Orientation – This course would be offered on an occasional basis to allow for the review of pending or proposed civil rights litigation regarding sexual orientation issues. Students would be introduced to the history of such litigation, how strategies used to litigate other civil liberties issues might be used in the area of sexual orientation law, and would discuss ways to advance the civil rights of gay and lesbian persons through court action (offered periodically).
