Domestic Partnership Benefits
All regular full-time and part-time (20+ hours/week) faculty and staff are eligible for health and dental insurance, subsequent to or concurrent with the first of the month following the day of hire. The medical insurance cost for single coverage is currently borne in full by the university for full-time faculty and staff, and 50 percent for eligible part-time faculty and staff. Family medical coverage is paid in full for faculty and staff. Single or family dental insurance costs are shared equally between you and the university. Qualified dependents for family medical and dental coverage include your spouse, domestic (same-sex) partner, and/or your unmarried children under 19 years of age. The age 19 limit does not apply to a dependent under age 25 who both depends on you for support and maintenance and is enrolled as a full-time student.
Tuition scholarships are available for regular full-time Hamline faculty and staff, as well as spouses, same-sex partners, and dependent children. You are eligible to receive direct tuition assistance immediately upon full-time employment. However, you must be full time and be employed a minimum of six months to satisfy eligibility requirements for scholarship assistance for spouses, same-sex partners, and dependent children. If you were hired prior to October 16, 1976, you are eligible for 100 percent of the tuition scholarship benefits for your dependents. If you were hired after October 16, 1976, you are eligible for 90 percent of the tuition scholarship benefits for your dependents.
Additional Information
Hamline University School of Law provides a welcoming climate for LGBT students. We have an active LGBT student
organization as well as out professors/administrators. Many faculty and staff members have participated in Safe Zone training.
In the classroom, professors raise LGBT issues in a number of courses, including Family Law, Constitutional Law, Property,
Tax, and Civil Rights.
Our LGBT student organization, the Stonewall Alliance, engages in a variety of activities, such as
attending Lobby Day at the state capital, hosting speakers/panel presentations, and offering social events. The Stonewall
Alliance also has an active involvement and relationship with the Minnesota Lavender Bar Association.
At Hamline, we
embrace a broad definition of diversity. Therefore, we encourage applicants to identify as a member of the LGBT
community on our application, but that depends on your comfort level. Hamline has a significantly representative LGBT
population, which has included transgender students. As a result of this, our facilities include a unisex bathroom.
Hamline is
located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, which has always been a progressive community. The Twin Cities of Minneapolis-Saint Paul
has the highest LGBT population percentage of any city in the US outside of San Francisco.
