Additional Information
The University of Houston Law Center offers a warm, supportive, and inclusive educational experience for students coming
from many different backgrounds. UHLC reflects the diverse and vibrant community it finds itself a part of, the city of Houston.
While an incredibly diverse community, specific to the LGBT community, Houston's current mayor is serving her second term (of
potentially three) and has the distinction of being Houston's second female mayor, and one of the first openly gay mayors
of a major US city. Additionally, Pride Houston has been a local community fixture for 33 years and began hosting the city's
Stonewall commemoration parade with the nation's only nighttime Pride Parade in 1997. The city of Houston is the fourth largest
US city and home to one of the world's largest legal markets.
Specifically at UHLC, applicants are able to avail themselves of the versatile documents and submissions inherent within the
application process; however, if an applicant wishes to submit an addendum that focuses on
sexual orientation or sexual identity, they are welcome to do so. Students not only benefit from the course
offerings available to them, but Outlaw, the student organization, has played a major role in raising awareness and support.
Recently, Outlaw hosted attorneys Mitchell Katine and John Nechman to discuss their experience with the 2003 US Supreme
Court case, Lawrence v. Texas, as well as their reflections on the recent changes with the Defense of Marriage Act.
