Nondiscrimination Policy

The University of Toronto Faculty of Law is bound by the policies and procedures in place at the university. The University of Toronto's current policies do not explicitly refer to discrimination on the basis of gender identity or expression. However, the university follows the practice of interpreting "sex and/or sexual orientation" to encompass all forms of gender identification and gender identity. This is in keeping with recent legal rulings and with the recommendation of the Ontario Human Rights Commission. Thus, any university policy that refers to sex or sexual orientation should be read as including gender identity, and any policy that includes sex or sexual orientation currently can be read as to include gender identity. These policies include the sexual harassment policy and procedures, the Statement on Prohibited Discrimination and Discriminatory Harassment (which gives effect to the human rights code), and the Code of Student Conduct.

Combined JD/Certificate in Sexual Diversity Studies

Starting in the 2012–2013 academic year, the Faculty of Law is offering a combined JD/Certificate in Sexual Diversity Studies. This certificate is designed for students who have an interest in examining questions about how we understand sexual diversity and sexual practices. Among these questions are how we frame and categorize sexual differences, why we fear some and celebrate others, and how medical, religious, and political authorities respond to them. The program complements students' legal training by providing an interdisciplinary framework within which concepts and methods from the study of law can be applied to a relevant topic, Sexual Diversity Studies. Students apply to the Faculty of Law alone. In their applications, or before the end of their first year, students should select the Sexual Diversity Studies as a certificate program option.

Domestic Partnership Benefits

JD students at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law are covered under the University of Toronto Student Union Health Plan. Its family coverage extends to spouses (including common law and same-sex partners). More information about the UTSU health plan's family coverage can be found at Family Coverage.
