Student Organization Contact Information

Hastings OUTLaw promotes a positive atmosphere at Hastings for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer students. The objective of the organization is to educate the community-at-large about the issues and concerns specific to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer persons in order to alleviate and eradicate homophobia, transphobia, racism, sexism, and other affronts to the dignity of individual human beings.

Course Titles and/or Descriptions

LGBTQ issues are interwoven into many of the courses at UC Hastings, including Employment Discrimination and the Law, Family Law, and Gender and the Law. LGBTQ themes also figure prominently within Hastings Social Justice Lawyering concentration courses, clinics, and internships.

In addition, a course entitled Sexuality and the Law is a popular elective for students interested in legal issues affecting the LGBTQ community. This course examines some of the rapidly expanding legal issues involving sexual orientation and gender identity. Substantive issues to be covered include the decriminalization of sodomy; the recognition of lesbian and gay relationships, including marriage, civil union, and domestic partnerships; employment discrimination and sexual harassment; immigration; gender identity issues; and the establishment and limitation of rights of expression and association. This course will use sexuality and gender theory, case law, and legislation to examine the law's evolving treatment of these fundamentally diverse and fluid communities.

Additional Information

Being an out LGBTQ student at UC Hastings is simply not an issue. Like the city of San Francisco, Hastings has long been a place of acceptance and openess for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. The UC Hastings community includes out professors, administrators, and students, as well as successful LGBTQ alumni. The college's proximity to state and federal courts, which are just blocks away from the campus, ensure that Hastings LGBTQ students have a front-row seat to legal LGBTQ issues such as gay marriage.
