Additional Information

The University of Missouri School of Law is an inclusive environment for LGBT students from the application process through graduation and job searches. The faculty, staff, and administration welcome and support LGBT students. The application allows LGBT applicants to self-identify and request information on organizations that interest them, including Lambda Legal Society, an organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people, and those living with HIV/AIDS through legislation and litigation. Lambda Legal is one of many organizations that works with the Office of Diversity Initiatives and Outreach to match its members with practicing attorneys and mentors who share similar backgrounds and common values. Lambda Legal also conducts a speakers' series on diversity, which brings in panelists from various organizations to discuss current issues in the LGBT community. Furthermore, it hosts an annual Variety Show and several social activities for the LGBT and ally community. As organizations that work to promote diversity, the Equal Justice Law Association and American Constitution Society work with Lambda Legal to help foster community.

The School of Law encourages the integration of various viewpoints within all classes and LGBT issues are openly discussed. The Family Law and Gender and the Law courses give in-depth coverage to issues especially relevant to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons, including same-sex marriage, cohabitants' property and support rights, child custody and visitation, second parent adoption, and assisted reproduction. In addition, courses in civil rights, fair housing, employment discrimination, estates and trusts, health law, and other fields cover many topics of concern to the LGBT community.

Campuswide, the University of Missouri has a large LGBTQ Resource Center with full-time professional staff. It offers programming, events, referrals, a check-out library, Safe Space training, student panels, discussion, and support groups. While the Resource Center is predominantly undergraduate-student focused, it is highly collaborative and cooperative with graduate students and organizations. There are also multiple groups—students and administrators—actively working on both of these issues. There are many resources for transgender students on our campus not widely available elsewhere in the country (e.g., hormone prescriptions at our campus Health Center and specific support groups for gender identity).

The University of Missouri sits in the center of Columbia, Missouri, halfway between Kansas City and St. Louis. Columbia is a diverse town, which offers a domestic partner registry and includes gender and sexual orientation in its nondiscrimination policy. Columbia also offers The Center Project, a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and ally community space.
