Nondiscrimination Policy
Vermont Law School (VLS) is committed to promoting an employment and educational environment free from unlawful harassment, sexual harassment, and discrimination. Unlawful harassment or discrimination on the basis of age, color, disability (including duty of reasonable accommodation), ethnicity, HIV-positive status, national origin, place of birth, race, religion, sex/gender (including gender identity/expression), sexual orientation, or veteran status as defined by applicable law ("protected characteristics") is prohibited and will not be tolerated. Course Titles and/or Descriptions
Sexual Orientation and the Law Seminar
Offered every year
This seminar will examine the way law and legal systems affect the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people. We will address domestic and international laws that sanction discrimination against the LGBT community and examine the present challenges faced by this community on the road to equality.
Domestic Partnership Benefits
Vermont Law School offers Domestic Partner Coverage to students, faculty, and staff. This includes same-sex spouses and civil unions. For information on health insurance coverage, contact our Benefits Administrator at ccollins@vermontlaw.edu.
Additional Information
Vermont Law School continues to encourage and support the LGBT rights movements. We made national headlines with our
opposition to the military's "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy. VLS was one of two law schools that excluded military recruiters
despite Congressional penalties until DADT was repealed in September 2011. VLS professors testified in legislative hearings
on the nation's first successful marriage equality legislation, and Vermont Law School was one of the first to include sexual
orientation (1986) and gender identity (2005) in its nondiscrimination policy.
Many students, staff, and professors come and
perform in drag at GAYLA, VLS's annual drag revue! This is one of the largest events of the year for students. VLS also sends
students to Lavendar Law, the annual conference of the National LGBT Bar Association.
