Financing Law School
Financing a Legal Education: Investing in Your Future
A law school education offers many benefits and involves certain costs. Your dream of going to law school must involve some practical financial planning. Financing a Legal Education: Investing in Your Future features law students and new lawyers talking about how they were able to achieve their dream as well as pay their bills. These students and lawyers, along with law school admission and financial aid experts, talk about how to select from a number of financing strategies tailored to your particular needs, ways to cut costs while living on a budget, repayment options after graduation, and mistakes that you can avoid. The program poses questions you should be asking yourself and your financial aid advisors when exploring this very important part of planning and preparing for law school.
Chapter 1 - “Sticker Shock”
In this opening section, we meet four law students (and one young lawyer) whose individual stories about financing their law school education will unfold in this video. Each student has had to deal with what one called “sticker shock;” each has approached the challenge with determination.
Chapter 2 - Borrowing: A Cautionary Tale
This section introduces two experienced financial aid advisors, as well as a working lawyer who talks about the consequences of his particular strategy. Some of the discussion centers around finding out what resources are available and how to find them.
Chapter 3 - Planning Your Strategy
How much should you borrow? How does your credit history affect the process? Should you work part time as well? These and other pertinent questions are addressed in this section.
Chapter 4 - Budgeting: Making Smart Decisions
This section looks at the issue of budgeting and offers some important practical tips. Some of the hidden costs of a law school education are revealed. Both this section and the following one include several first-hand accounts of how the choices one makes before (or during) law school can affect life after law school.
Chapter 5 - Repayment: Thinking Ahead
The last chapter is a discussion of repayment options, and shows how financing a law school education can be an investment in your future.
