Introduction

Female student using a computerAmong the top law schools in the country, the Michigan State University College of Law is part of Michigan State University, one of the top universities in the world. MSU has one of the largest international student populations in the nation, with more than 10 percent hailing from other countries.

MSU Law is an independent, private law college that is academically integrated with a powerhouse public university. MSU Law students get all the specialized attention of a private, student-centered law college, surrounded and lifted by the resources of a distinguished Big Ten University. MSU Law students truly enjoy the best of both worlds.

With a strong history of creating practice-ready attorneys, MSU Law combines its own academic strengths with those of the larger university. In particular, the MSU College of Law has a one-of-a-kind joint program with MSU's English Language Center, giving future LLM students the English training they need to excel in their legal studies.

This joint program, the Legal Education for Academic Preparation (LEAP) program, combines traditional English as a Second Language (ESL) training in the first stage with technical and specific legal English and prelaw courses in the second stage. This unique approach, built upon the strengths of both MSU and MSU Law, gives LLM students an edge by providing them with training they would not receive elsewhere.

MSU Law professors are gifted teachers and distinguished scholars. The Law College curriculum is rigorous and challenging, and the facility is equipped with the latest resources—all affirming MSU Law's commitment to educating 21st century lawyers. These distinguished professors are also very accessible to students and provide mentoring and personal attention to those they teach.

Benefits of attending MSU Law continue after graduation, as our graduates join a network of more than 400,000 alumni. Around the globe, across the nation, throughout Michigan, or on campus—the MSU Law community is as broad or intimate as you want it to be and will work for you as you make your mark on the world.

Law School Enrollment

Michigan State University College of Law has a total student enrollment of approximately 1,000 students, about 10 percent of which is international. The LLM programs enroll approximately 60 students per year, while the LEAP program enrolls approximately 50 students each year who eventually will join the incoming LLM class.

Michigan State University is one of the nation's "Big Ten" universities, with a student population of more than 45,000 undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students. In addition to the law school, the university has a medical school, veterinary school, business school, and several other professional programs.

Physical Facilities

The Law College makes its home on the beautiful MSU campus in East Lansing, Michigan—the arts, cultural, and recreational center of mid-Michigan. Everything students need for their studies is located in one building in the heart of the largest continuous campus in the country. MSU Law is just minutes from the state capital, which provides a connection to the legislature and Supreme Court for Michigan.

All Law College classrooms, offices, lounges, and meeting spaces are located in the Law College building, along with a small cafeteria. The Law College's John F. Schaefer Law Library dominates the first floor of the building, with an impressive collection of materials (260,000 volumes), computer terminals, and ample study space. The entire campus is wireless, and all classrooms have portals for students to plug their computers into a power source.

Students can use one of three fitness facilities on campus, eat at many of the restaurants and dining halls on campus, or even have food delivered to them in the Law Building.

Housing

A wide variety of housing options are available to students. Many students choose to live in the Spartan Village Apartments on the MSU campus, which is home to a large international population. Others live right across the street from the Law College in the Owen Graduate Hall, which has a newly transformed dining area with made-to-order food stations and outdoor seating.

Student Services and Organizations

MSU Law has a wide variety of student organizations that serve a diverse student population. These groups give students a range of social, educational, community service, and networking opportunities. LLM student programming is led by the LLM Student Association.

Students in the LLM programs at MSU Law benefit from the strong student services available to them through the MSU Law-MSU affiliation. Not only does an in-house office exist to serve international and other LLM students, but MSU has its own Office of International Students and Scholars, counseling services, and other resources, as well as hundreds of student groups that LLM students can join.

This unique mix of MSU Law and MSU services gives LLM students the best resources available, while also making sure all students receive personalized attention as part of a small, private law college.

Career Services

LLM students benefit from a host of career development opportunities, including personal consultations with Career Services staff, résumé-writing workshops, mock interviews, and assistance finding job shadowing, externship, and other opportunities. The Career Services Office also hosts a professional etiquette dinner and other events aimed at preparing students for the legal workforce.

Both the Career Services Office and the Office of Advancement help students reach out to alumni working abroad. LLM students also have access to the entire MSU alumni community abroad—a huge network of individuals in almost every country around the world.

The Law College's Academic Success Program helps students prepare to take a bar exam in the United States with special workshops, personal consultations, and other resources.

MSU Law LLM program graduates fondly remember their experiences at the Law College and cherish their lifelong place in the Spartan family. Many recent graduates consider their time at MSU Law life-changing, both personally and professionally.
