Introduction
The University of Dayton—Catholic, Marianist, innovative—stands as a leader in higher education and one of the preeminent Catholic universities in the nation. It is the largest private university in Ohio.
This is a university on the move with a deep commitment to academic excellence. A University of Dayton education is transformative. Students are prepared for both life and work and learn skills in building community. Our students lead through service to others.
Founded by the Society of Mary (the Marianists) in 1850, the University of Dayton focuses on educating the whole person through a community of challenge and support. At the University of Dayton, you'll find a friendly, welcoming campus that embraces diversity. Nationally recognized as a top-tier university, we offer the resources of a large university and the personal attention you'd expect at a small college.
The University of Dayton School of Law is an integral part of the University of Dayton. We share the university's commitment to serving others and offering an education that blends theory and practice. Our mission has important implications for how law is taught here, and how you can expect to be treated as a student. We focus on attention to the individual, from first contact to well beyond graduation.
Our faculty and student services team focuses on ensuring that each of our students is prepared to serve as a problem-solving leader with ethics and integrity. Our faculty members are consistently praised for their high-quality teaching and willingness to take an active interest in students' lives outside the classroom. We encourage our students to become servant leaders in their communities, promoting justice and serving others.
As a law school with a growing reputation, we are committed to developing and offering outstanding programs of study. We continually invest in those areas most important to the education of our students: our dedicated faculty, our innovative curriculum, and the physical environment in which our students' education takes place.
Program in Law and Technology
Advances in computers, communications systems, electronics, and biotechnology occur at a breathtaking pace, and the Internet is having a revolutionary impact on commerce and entertainment. The law school faculty recognized early on the importance of many of these developments. In 1989, Dayton Law committed itself to producing graduates who are well-versed in law and technology issues by creating the Program in Law and Technology.
As the Program in Law and Technology has developed over the last 20 years, it has become internationally known. We have had a variety of distinguished visitors and speakers, including the United States commissioner of patents and trademarks and the general counsel for StreamCast, as well as others from China, the Netherlands, and Australia. The program has also regularly sponsored advanced programs for practitioners and scholarly symposia.
The Program in Law and Technology is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in several areas: patent law, copyright and trademark law, business dimensions of intellectual property law (particularly the licensing of intellectual property), and computer/cyberspace law.
LLM Programs/Areas of Specialization
Dayton Law offers a graduate degree in Intellectual Property and Technology Law to US and international lawyers. The LLM degree is available to international students who have already earned a first degree in law from a foreign university upon the completion of 30 credits of coursework on a full-time or part-time basis.
The program offers instruction in all aspects of intellectual property law, computer-related and cyberspace law, and both entertainment and mass communication law. The LLM program has a number of innovative courses exploring the business dimensions of developing technological and intellectual assets and the intricacies of electronic commercial transactions.
Our graduate program in Intellectual Property and Technology Law focuses on the application of law and public policy to foster creativity, invention, and innovation and to facilitate the transformation of those creative efforts into economic development and competitive business advantage.
International Students
The University of Dayton's Center for International Programs staff assists international students with a wide variety of areas such as immigration issues, counseling, personal advising, social and extracurricular activities, and emergencies. The office also serves as a link between international students and the rest of the university and the surrounding community. The center's World Exchange serves as a lounge and conference/work area, which fosters international interaction and partnership between those with international interests. Internationally oriented student clubs, faculty, and staff utilize this space for classes, meetings, and other international exchanges.
For those international students studying English as a second language, the center's Intensive English Program develops students' English skills in preparation for the LLM program. Course offerings include grammar, reading and writing, listening and speaking, TOEFL® preparation, and pronunciation.
Admission Requirements
All candidates for the LLM degree are required to have a first degree in law from an accredited US law school or from a foreign university authorized to confer such a degree by the government of the country in which it is located.
All candidates for the LLM degree must be fluent in the English language. For foreign students whose native language is not English, this requirement may be met by having completed their basic legal or baccalaureate studies in a university where instruction was in English or by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) administered by the Educational Testing Service and attaining a score of at least 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based), or 100 (iBT) or by taking an equivalent exam with similar results. Scores from TOEFL or other tests more than two years prior to application to the program will not be accepted.
All candidates for the LLM degree will be evaluated for admission on academic and personal criteria, including law school and university transcripts, prior academic performance as demonstrated by indices such as an acceptable grade point average (GPA) in relevant coursework, standardized test performance where appropriate, other academic records, employment experience, and other personal accomplishments.
Application Deadlines: We have rolling admissions for the LLM program but urge applicants to apply two to four months before their anticipated start date.
