Introduction

Established in 1892, the University of Colorado Law School is one of the top public law schools in the United States. Colorado Law School's diverse student body is selected from among the statistically best applicants from every corner of the nation representing over 100 undergraduate institutions, and its highly published faculty is dedicated to interacting with students both inside and outside the classroom. The school's state-of-the-art green building is located at the base of the Rocky Mountains in beautiful Boulder, Colorado. With about 540 students and a low faculty-to-student ratio, Colorado Law School is a thriving academic community where the study of law is embraced to create leaders who recognize the civic responsibilities essential to the legal profession.

The school offers a range of doctrinal courses relating to virtually every area of legal study and practice. In addition, Colorado Law boasts a robust experiential learning program including a diversity of clinical experiences, externships, and court competitions, as well as a pro bono public service pledge program. The school also has four research centers, three student-run journals, eight dual degree programs, and four certificate programs. It is nationally recognized for programs in entrepreneurship, intellectual property, natural resource and environmental law, American Indian law, and juvenile and family law.

University of Colorado Law School offers full-time JD and LLM degrees:

  • Juris Doctor (JD)—full-time, three-year program
  • LLM degrees in the following areas of law:
    • Entrepreneurial Law
    • Information Technology/Intellectual Property
    • Natural Resources
    • Climate Change and Energy

Law School Enrollment

Colorado Law has a total student enrollment of approximately 545. The LLM program enrolls approximately seven new students to the program each year.

Physical Facilities

The Wolf Law Building, located on the southern end of the University of Colorado at Boulder campus, was completed in August 2006 and dedicated on September 8. A decade in the planning and construction, the building has been financed by alumni, friends, law firms, and 60 percent by students. In addition, this technologically advanced facility was constructed to the US Green Building Council's "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design" (LEED) building certification.

The Wolf Law Building is one of the most technologically advanced law schools in the country, providing our students with the best learning environment possible.

  • At 180,000 square feet (5 stories), the Wolf Law Building has ample space to allow Colorado Law to grow, recruit top faculty, hold large events, and promote our nationally recognized law centers, clinics, and journals.
  • Our state-of-the-art classrooms include wireless networking, video conferencing capabilities for distance-learning, and complete audio-visual equipment. Classrooms range in size from 20 to 100 seats, and all classrooms feature natural lighting and accessible seating for students with disabilities.
  • The Wolf Law Building houses two high-tech courtrooms with leading-edge videotaping and distance-learning capabilities. The Wittemyer Courtroom is a venue for symposia, class meetings, conferences, ceremonial events, and other large gatherings. The Law School hosts actual sessions of state, federal, and tribal appellate courts. The Carrigan Teaching Courtroom is used for classes, moot court competitions, and litigation training.
  • The William A. Wise Law Library is the most comprehensive and technologically advanced in the 12-state Rocky Mountain region. At 59,000 square feet, it includes computer labs and learning areas throughout the library. Our library is also the regional archive for the United States government (making it the most complete law library in Colorado).
  • In keeping with an outstanding national reputation for environmental law, the Wolf Law Building was constructed to the exacting standards of LEED building certification.
  • Colorado Law offers Internet-based video-recording stations and interview rooms, and digital information kiosks throughout the building.
  • In 2010, 52 rooftop solar panels and an electrical car charging station were installed. The solar panels provide Colorado Law with up to 11.96 kilowatts of energy per hour. The station is a "smart system," meaning that electric car drivers can see when it is available and receive text messages when their car is finished charging.

Housing

The University of Colorado Boulder has a limited amount of on-campus family housing, which is available to LLM students. Almost all students live off campus. Boulder and the surrounding communities offer plenty of single-family, condo, and apartment living options. Boulder has an extensive bus system, which students may take advantage of by using their CU Buff OneCard (ID card).

LLM Programs

Colorado Law School offers Master of Laws degrees in four areas of study in which the strength of our faculty, curriculum, and programs are recognized nationally and internationally. The Colorado Law LLM will offer students the opportunity to prepare for excellence in their careers in a setting amid the beautiful foothills of the Rocky Mountains, yet only 30 minutes from the vibrant city of Denver, Colorado.

Student Services and Organizations

As a public institution with a tradition of public service and public interest law, we strive to instill in our students an awareness of a lawyer's civic responsibilities and to offer opportunities to serve and lead. Students are actively engaged inside the classroom, as well as outside, with 350 Law School-hosted events every year, over 30 student organizations, 3 student journals, countless legal volunteer opportunities, broader University events, and a range of social and outdoor activities that only the Rocky Mountains can provide.

In the voluntary Public Service Pledge Program, Colorado Law students pledge to volunteer a minimum of 50 hours of law-related service during their time at the school. For those students who complete the hours, their public service is recognized on the students' transcript. Faculty help connect law students with organizations and lawyers who need pro bono assistance.

Colorado Law's faculty and administration are dedicated to helping all our law students not only succeed, but thrive both academically and personally. Visit Student Life to learn more about the thriving student life at Colorado Law.

Career Services

The University of Colorado Law School offers a variety of services to our LLM students. Our professional staff provides individual counseling for students and alumni, critiquing résumés and cover letters, helping students develop individual job-search action plans, and connecting students with employment opportunities.

Every semester and throughout the summer, our counselors conduct extensive employer outreach in and out of state. We provide students with numerous legal employer-networking opportunities on campus. To highlight a few, each year we host the CU/DU Government and Public Interest Career Symposium in the fall and the Private Practice Symposium in the spring, both of which bring more than 50 employers to campus. We also partner with bar associations and other schools to provide outside networking and career opportunities.

Attorneys from the local legal community speak to our students during weekly informational sessions about what it's like to work in a variety of legal practice areas. These programs provide valuable networking opportunities.

Furthermore, our faculty LLM program directors are well-connected in their respective areas of law, and are tremendous networking resources for jobs.
