Introduction

We welcome your interest in the LLM Program at the University of Georgia School of Law. Our LLM Program offers:

  • exceptional value
  • freedom to select among several areas of law for concentrated study
  • a choice between an All-Courses curriculum and one in which students write a supervised research paper
  • the advantage of a comprehensive curriculum that covers all of the major subject areas of United States Law
  • a welcoming environment in a picturesque college town with a low cost of living and close proximity to Atlanta

One of the principal attractions of Georgia Law is the friendly and informal interchange between the members of the faculty and LLM and JD students. LLM students come from all over the world and have many opportunities to interact with Georgia Law's JD students.

Law School Enrollment

The University of Georgia School of Law has a total student enrollment of approximately 700 full-time JD and LLM students. The LLM class expects 15–20 new LLM students each fall.

Physical Facilities

Located in northeast Georgia, Athens has grown alongside the University of Georgia and its students for the past two centuries. The Classic City, as it is known, mixes small-town charm and comfort with a progressive atmosphere and a rich art, music, and intellectual culture. The law school is located in the heart of historic North Campus, adjacent to downtown's local restaurants and quirky shops.

The Dean Rusk Center was established in 1977 to expand the scope of research, teaching, and service in international law and policy in order to increase understanding of international issues, provide a sound basis for foreign policy decision-making, and contribute solutions to global problems. Today the center serves as a nucleus for collaboration between University of Georgia School of Law faculty and students, the law school community, and diverse international partners on foreign and transnational legal and policy matters. Every year the center also invites scholars from abroad to engage in collaborative research with faculty and to teach short courses that enhance the law school's educational offerings.

Hirsh Hall is the original building to house the UGA School of Law. The interior spaces include lecture halls, faculty offices, a large student lounge (which is complemented by a Jittery Joe's Coffee shop), seven group study/interview rooms, a greatly expanded and upgraded locker room, and student organization offices. A glass wall views the Sutherland Courtyard, one of the highlights of the law school's facilities. Featuring silver cloud granite benches and flooring, outside seating and lighting, and a water fountain, this private courtyard has become a popular spot for studying, gathering with friends, meeting with professors, or just taking a break from the day.

The Law Library has a rich, established collection of over 600,000 volumes. The library staff are dedicated to providing anytime/anywhere access to information and utilizing new technologies to deliver that information. The library's physical facility is outstanding with two-story picture windows that offer a view of beautifully landscaped North Campus. Highlights of the library collection include the comprehensive collections of state and federal law; United States government documents; an extensive collection of United Nations documents; European Union documents; and a well-developed collection of foreign and international law designed to support the LLM program, the Rusk Center, the Georgia Journal of International and Comparative Law, and the work of several internationally acclaimed scholars who are members of the law faculty.

Students at the University of Georgia also enjoy other benefits such as membership to the Ramsey Center. The Ramsey Center offers an indoor pool, basketball courts, racquetball courts, weights, fitness classes, and personal training. Also, students can enjoy the many sports and cultural events hosted by UGA.

LLM in US Law

The University of Georgia LLM program offers highly qualified and motivated law school graduates the opportunity to pursue an individually fashioned program of coursework in an area of law that suits their professional interests at one of the nation's most highly regarded law schools.

Candidates may choose the All-Courses track or the Essay track. The All-Courses track gives students the opportunity to create an individualized program of study by selecting courses specific to their interests from the School of Law's extensive curriculum. The LLM degree offered at the University of Georgia is awarded without reference to specialization, although such specialization may be apparent from the student's study program. Those students who opt for the Essay track must write a scholarly paper 60–90 pages in length for six credits under the supervision of a faculty member. The LLM degree is awarded upon the successful completion of 24 hours of course credit during an academic year.

During the fall semester, a special course designed specifically for foreign-educated students offers instruction on legal research and writing in US law. Training in the use of research tools, including computerized research, is a key element of the class.

LLM graduates are encouraged to take advantage of training opportunities with law firms and companies in Georgia and elsewhere in the United States. Both the LLM program and the Law School's Office of Legal Career Services assist LLM graduates in their search for employment.
