Official Guide to LLM, Master’s, and Certificate Programs
Advance your career opportunities with a graduate law degree at Seattle University School of Law. Beyond the Juris Doctor (JD), we offer specializations designed to give you the skills and knowledge to be competitive in the workforce.
LLM in American Legal Studies
The LLM in American Legal Studies is designed as a general overview and is intended for foreign-trained lawyers who wish to become eligible to take a bar exam in the United States.
Seattle is a diverse and welcoming city that has much to offer prospective students. Located on the Pacific Rim, Seattle enjoys a stunning natural setting, with the Cascade Mountains to the east, Mt. Rainier to the south, and the Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains to the west. The greater Seattle metropolitan area is a global hub for commerce and the technology industry.
LLM in Elder Law
A recent Census Bureau publication estimates that the number of elderly Americans will double between 2012 and 2050. The LLM in Elder Law will train attorneys to meet the needs of our aging population through representation, advocacy, and leadership in the areas of law that impact elders and people with disabilities. The program emphasizes building skills and knowledge in the areas of access to health care coverage (Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, Affordable Care Act coverage), income maintenance and retirement planning (Social Security, SSI, private pensions, retirement savings), financing the high cost of long-term care (long-term care insurance, Medicaid), protection from abuse and neglect, consumer protection, guardianship, age/disability discrimination, housing, and estate and incapacity planning.
LLM in Innovation and Technology Law
Seattle has emerged as a leading global hub for the technology industry. The city hosts a remarkable base of knowledge, talent, and opportunity that inspires our LLM in Innovation and Technology Law program. The program addresses the substantial need for a new cadre of legal service professionals who are well-trained in the underlying regulatory schemes and well-versed in the technological and strategic features that define the newest methods of doing business. Disruptive technologies, pervasive data privacy concerns, a new digital economy, and cyber X—from crime to warfare—drive this demand. As a student in Seattle University School of Law’s LLM in Innovation and Technology Law program, you will receive both academic and practical training in the various legal issues and doctrines affecting, and affected by, technological innovation in business. You will emerge as part of that new cadre of legal professionals, and be ready to confront these new challenges.
The program curriculum places particular emphasis upon matters of privacy, cybersecurity, digital commerce, and financial technology. Students examine the interplay between technological innovation, complex legal doctrines and regulatory approaches, business and market models (both cutting-edge and traditional), and the various actors whose interests, perspectives, and goals affect the technology law landscape. The program is open to graduates of both domestic and foreign law schools.
LLM in Tribal Law & Governance
Seattle University School of Law offers the largest Indian and tribal law program in the Pacific Northwest. The LLM in Tribal Law & Governance program is designed to provide attorneys, judges, and law professors with both academic and practical training in the areas of tribal law, federal Indian law, traditional forms of governance, and policy within the federal, state, and tribal structures through a flexible program of study.
The LLM will benefit the student interested in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and cultural understanding needed to work as an attorney in a law firm practicing federal Indian law or representing tribes; or working in a tribal legal office, tribal government, federal government, or a tribally chartered corporation; or in representing non-Indian individuals and corporations doing business in Indian country.
In addition to academic offerings, the law school provides LLM students with outstanding opportunities for scholarship, field trips, social events, and networking through the law school’s Center for Indian Law & Policy, the American Indian Law Journal, and the Alaska satellite campus, as well as the law school’s numerous externships and internships with tribes and native corporations in the Northwest.
