In our technologically advanced world, intellectual property has become increasingly important to individuals, corporations, organizations, governments, and lawyers. Through our IP programs, symposiums, and Center for Intellectual Property Law and Technology, there are numerous opportunities for students with nonscientific and scientific backgrounds to explore innovative issues involving trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, patents, licensing, Internet, entertainment, and other areas in this “hot” industry.

Admission

To be considered for admission, you must submit an application form, cover letter, and résumé. You must also register for LSAC’s LLM Credential Assembly Service (LLM CAS) before the file may be sent to the Admissions Committee. For more details on admission, please see our website.

Physical Facilities

The students sit at broad, gray desks behind open laptops.The law building is currently undergoing a $21 million renovation, including the addition of a new courtroom, interactive state-of-the art classrooms, a café, and expanded student areas. The university’s $200 million New Landscape for Learning campus improvement program includes a new Student Union, Student Recreation and Wellness Center, Student Affairs Building, academic buildings, and parking decks. The law school is within one block of the Akron Municipal Court, the court of common pleas, and the Ninth District Court of Appeals. The federal court is a few blocks from campus. Although the law school is in the downtown Akron area, the campus is green, bordered by grassy areas, decorative plantings, and fountains.

Student Activities and Leadership

Leading faculty from across the country volunteer their time to work with our intellectual property students. For example, our Intellectual Property Advisory Council is composed of distinguished attorneys located in Ohio; Washington, DC; California; Georgia; Florida; and even South Korea and meets with students regularly. As an LLM student, you can become involved in any of our 20 law student organizations, including the Intellectual Property and Technology Law Association, International Law Society, Black Law Students Association, Asian-Latino Law Students Association, Environmental Law Society, Gay/Straight Law Alliance, Law Association for Women, Akron Public Interest Law Society, Student Bar Association, and more.

Library and Technology

UA’s campus is wireless, allowing for Internet and network access in any building on campus. The law library contains 256,045 volumes. Students have access to 50 million library items, 13 million unique titles that may be delivered through OhioLINK, 5 million library items through UA Libraries Catalog, and many full-text resources, including 10,000 journals, more than 20 million articles, and 81,000 e-books. Law students also receive free access to LexisNexis, Westlaw, and Bloomberg Law.

Career Planning and Placement

Diverse students study together in the library. Stacks of blue and teal books are lined up behind them. The students have a laptop and several books opened on the table in front of them.The Career Planning and Placement Office (CPPO) counsels law students on résumé writing, job searching and interviewing skills, and preparing for entrance into the legal profession. On-campus interviews, a minority clerkship program, an attorney-student mentor program, employment-related seminars, and career fairs are offered. Akron’s extensive law alumni database enables the CPPO to assist students with networking opportunities nationwide. The office assists in the placement of students in law-related positions during summer sessions and upper-division years. Graduates receive placement assistance, on request, throughout their careers.
