WVU Law also offered a special perspective course in Spring 2016 on Sexuality and the Law. The course considered concepts such as consent, privacy, power, and normalcy in the context of specific topics such as sexual harassment, rape, reproduction, pornography, prostitution, transgender, lesbianism, male homosexuality, bisexuality, cyber-sex, AIDS, children, and same-sex marriage.

Domestic-Partner or Same-Sex Marriage Benefits

In October 2014, same-sex marriage became legally recognized in the state of West Virginia. Therefore, same-sex married couples are afforded the same benefit packages available to all married couples. In addition, domestic partners of faculty and staff have access to optional benefits like WVU Recreation Center memberships, Child Learning Center discounts, employee wellness activities, Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, and library privileges.

Additional Information

The WVU College of Law strives to provide a safe and welcoming environment for LGBT students.

Dozens of students, faculty, and staff wear purple for Spirit Day and support the Safe Zone program. The college offers unisex restroom facilities.

While West Virginia is widely seen as socially conservative on LGBT issues, Morgantown and the College of Law are considered much more progressive. There is an LGBT advocacy organization called Fairness West Virginia that is dedicated to fair treatment and civil rights for LGBT West Virginians.
