LSAT Inbox – Test Centers and Remote Exceptions

Welcome to the LSAT Inbox! This is a blog series that answers frequently asked questions about the LSAT®. We encourage you to check back often for answers to more questions you may have as you prepare for the test.

Why did LSAC change to center-only testing?

The move to center testing for test takers will help ensure the long-term security and integrity of the LSAT.

Can I take LSAT Argumentative Writing at the test center?

All test takers will still complete their LSAT Argumentative Writing remotely via ProctorU. LSAT Argumentative Writing opens eight days prior to the start of each administration, and most test takers can complete their writing sample at their convenience, while some will need to schedule a live proctoring appointment. Please review JD Services and any accommodation approval letters for more information.

How can I reduce distractions in a test center?

Test centers will have noise cancelling headphones available to all test takers, and you may also bring foam, non-corded earplugs with you. If you are not able to test in person due to a medical condition or other disability-related need, you may modify your accommodations to request approval to test remotely under our Category 3 criteria. Please see our Documentation Requirements page for more information.

How do I request a remote testing exception if I can’t test at a center?

Exceptions will be limited and only available if there is not a center within a 180-mile radius of your location. You will be able to confirm the nearest centers when scheduling opens. In the instance where a center is not available within the 180-mile radius, you may submit a distance exception request through JD Services after the registration deadline of the administration you are registered for up until four days before center scheduling closes.

Do you offer reimbursement for travel and hotel expenses?

We do not offer any reimbursement for travel or hotel expenses.

My exception request was denied (or there was no test center with a private room available). What other options do I have?

Test Center to Remote:

If there is a center available within a three-hour drive or 180-mile radius of your location, you will need to schedule at an available center prior to the scheduling deadline or move your registration to the next available test date. Please note that test date change fees may apply.

Remote to Test Center:

If your request to switch from remote testing to center testing was denied or if there was no center with a private room available, you may either schedule a remote testing appointment and locate an alternate testing space or compatible device, or you can move your registration to the next available test date. Please note that test date change fees may apply.

I missed the deadline to request an exception. Can I still submit one?

We are unable to accept requests once the deadline has passed. If you are unable to schedule in your required modality, you can move your registration to the next test date. Please note that test date change fees may apply.
