Job Description
The Pre-Law advisor supports pre-law students in career exploration and preparation for law school applications. The advisor provides comprehensive guidance through dynamic and engaging programming content and coaching services to undergraduate students interested in law and policy. Advisor guides students in innovative ways to support their career goals, collaborates with campus partners, student organizations, and academic partners to facilitate workshops across campus, and identifies area-specific resources.
The Office of Career Advancement and Engagement (CAE), established in 2021 and housed within the Provost’s Office, serves as a central hub for career strategy and employer engagement at Vanderbilt. CAE fosters cross-campus collaboration by integrating career development into the full student experience and connecting students and alumni to meaningful career opportunities.
CAE is composed of two core areas:
- Career Center – Supports undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and recent alumni (0–2 years out) with comprehensive career coaching and resources.
- Corporate Partnerships – Leads employer and alumni engagement strategies, cultivating high-impact relationships with companies across industries.
Together, these units drive Vanderbilt’s mission to prepare students for lifelong success and strengthen the university’s ties with industry and alumni communities nationwide
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver programming content for pre-law students, including the timeline of the pre-law track, pathways to gain experience, an understanding of the application process, and necessary application documents.
- Engage with students through individual and group coaching related to specialized topics.
- Use the latest research and coaching techniques to create workshops around career assessment, career/major decision-making, and career development.
- Strengthen relationships with faculty and administrators across campus by serving as a key resource for pre-law advising and career planning programs for student residences, student organizations, Immersion, and other venues to expand students’ opportunities.
- Create programming content primarily about law fields in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, including, but not limited to, alumni, parents, law school admissions offices, and employers.
- Collaborate with the Career Center team to enhance programmatic options and identify employment opportunities for students interested in legal careers, focusing on part-time, internships, summer jobs, and post-graduate employment in the United States and internationally.
- Serve as the adviser to pre-law aligned student organizations, including but not limited to Vanderbilt Pre-Law Society, Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity, and Vanderbilt Undergraduate Moot Court Board.
- Assist the Employer Relations team with events, special programming, employer events, and the law school fair and information sessions.
- Implement a robust feedback loop for all programming, using surveys and assessments to continuously improve and adapt workshops and resources based on student needs.
- Coordinate with the marketing coordinator to maintain the webpage, handout content, and other marketing/informational materials supporting students in career and major selection, developing internships and summer experiences, and learning about law careers.
- Maintain accurate statistical reporting of activities through Handshake and internal reporting systems. Work with the team to assess student outcomes and value of programming and services.
