LawReady™ Frequently Asked Questions

LawReady on Campus

How long does LawReady take to complete?

LawReady is designed to be completed within two to three years. We encourage students to enroll early in their undergraduate studies to experience the full benefits of the program.

Do I have to major in a specific subject to participate in LawReady?

Not at all. LawReady does not require you to declare a specific undergraduate major. You can pursue the degree program of your choice while satisfying the requirements for LawReady. Students who are successful in law school, and become accomplished professionals, come from all educational backgrounds. This diversity of perspectives enriches the overall law school experience.

My school does not offer LawReady. How can I get it to become part of the program?

There are a number of colleges and universities engaged in discussions with LSAC to bring LawReady to their students. You can express your interest and enthusiasm for LawReady by contacting your school’s prelaw advisor(s) to support becoming a LawReady school. Share the LawReady information page for undergraduate institutions with them or send us an email at LSACinfo@LSAC.org to have a member of our team reach out to your institution.

Can all students sign up for LawReady?

Currently, only students enrolled at participating undergraduate institutions are eligible to register for the program. If you attend a LawReady school and are interested in signing up, you’ll need to contact prelaw advising on your campus to learn more about any eligibility criteria for your school.

Who should I talk to for advice on which LawReady-aligned courses to take at my school?

The academic team at LSAC collaborates with your institution to identify specific courses in the undergraduate curriculum that will help you develop the skills and abilities needed to succeed in law school. Once you are enrolled in LawReady, you will meet with your faculty advisor to incorporate these classes into your course plan. Over time, you’ll accumulate a digital portfolio of work and get an opportunity to earn the LawReady certificate.

How do I get matched with a mentor?

We try our best to match students with mentors who have a similar background and career interests. During the match process, you will have an opportunity to share information about your interests and preferences with us. More details about the mentor match process will be shared as they are finalized.

Is there a fee waiver for LawReady?

Yes! As a not-for-profit organization, LSAC’s mission is to advance law and justice by encouraging diverse, talented individuals to study law and by supporting their enrollment and learning journeys from prelaw through practice. Our fee waiver program is designed for those who are financially under-resourced, with the goal of increasing equity and access to legal education. The fee waiver program recognizes different levels of financial need and waives fees related to various LSAC products and services. How long are fee waivers valid?

LSAC fee waivers are valid for two years. If you need a fee waiver to cover costs associated with applying to law school (such as the LSAT and CAS) more than two years after you were approved for a fee wavier for LawReady, you can apply for another fee waiver. If you’re approved, the second fee waiver will last an additional two years.

If I don’t earn the certificate, can I still submit the digital portfolio as part of my law school application?

At the end of the program, you will be able to add the digital portfolio service. There will be a cost of $150 associated with compiling and submitting the digital portfolio to each law school to which you apply.

What is the LawReady Reasoning Test?

The LawReady Reasoning Test is a 50-question multiple choice test administered as part of reasoning-focused LawReady courses. Whether you qualify to earn the LawReady certificate depends, in part, on your performance on this test. The test is administered through LawReady’s portal and is proctored in person by the professor of the associated reasoning course(s). You may take the exam once per semester with a maximum of four attempts total.

Law School Admission Process

How do I know if the law school to which I want to apply participates in the LawReady program?

LawReady has overwhelming support from ABA-approved law schools that are leading the way in their commitment to innovation in legal education. Many of these schools have agreed to consider LawReady as part of their holistic admission process. Check out the most up-to-date list of participating law schools here.

Do LawReady students have to take the LSAT?

Yes, LawReady students planning to apply to law school should still plan on taking the LSAT®. While many law schools will consider LawReady as part of the holistic admission process, individual law schools still have specific application requirements. The LSAT is the only test accepted by every law school in the U.S. and Canada because it’s specifically designed to assess the skills needed for success in law school and beyond – namely, logical reasoning, critical reading, analytical reasoning, and writing skills. Throughout your time in LawReady, you will be able to develop and refine these skills as part of your law school preparation!

Will participating in LawReady enhance my law school application?

ABA-approved law schools overwhelmingly support LawReady, and many have agreed to consider it as part of their holistic admissions process. However, the evaluation of LawReady data and how it is incorporated into the law school application review process is at the discretion of each law school. As you research law schools and prepare for the application process, we encourage you to connect with each law school you are considering and ask about its specific admissions process as it relates to LawReady. Check out the most up-to-date list of participating law schools here.
