LGBT Survey Results: Elon University School of Law

Nondiscrimination Policy

Elon University does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, color, creed, sex, national or ethnic origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or veteran’s status (collectively, “Protected Categories”) in the recruitment and admission of students, the recruitment and employment of faculty and staff, or the operation of any of its programs.

LGBT Student Organization(s)

OutLaw is the school’s social and educational organization that fosters a supportive and accepting environment for LGBT students, faculty, staff, and professionals at Elon Law and in the greater legal community. In the 2015–2016 academic year, OutLaw hosted a Student/Alumni Networking Dinner to connect students to some of the local practicing LGBT alumni, as well as to provide a relaxed social event for alumni to reconnect. OutLaw also hosted a special forum titled “LGBT Law Now: An Inside Look at State Gay Marriage Cases.” OutLaw is a member of Elon Law’s Diversity Committee. The organization as a whole tries to create a welcoming atmosphere for LGBT students at the law school through educational and social activities. In that regard, the administration and OutLaw are working together to add an OutLaw social to the fall 2016 orientation schedule to help connect new students who identify as LGBT or allies.

Additional Information

In 2015, Campus Pride, one of the nation’s largest educational organizations for LGBT college students and campus groups, named Elon University among the top 25 American colleges and universities for policies, programs, and practices friendly to LGBT students. Elon earned 4.5 out of 5 stars for its support services, training programs, and institutional policies.

Elon Law also has a positive climate for LGBT students. Like the university, the law school provides unisex facilities. Elon Law faculty and staff have participated in Ally Training provided by the University’s Gender Resource Center. The law school is located in the city of Greensboro, a community highly supportive of LGBT residents.

While the law school’s application for admission does not specifically inquire about sexual orientation or sexual identity, applicants often discuss these topics in their personal statements. The admission committee seeks to enroll a diverse class in all respects, including sexual orientation and sexual identity.
