Marc Maurer’s story is nothing short of inspiring. He’s been blind since he was an infant, and he attended law school at a time when accommodations for students with disabilities were a far cry from what they are today. Today, December 3, is the United Nations’ International Day of Persons With Disabilities. The U.N. has marked this occasion since 1992, and the goal of the observance is to “promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.” That goal is at the core of our mission at LSAC, where we’ve worked hard to help people with disabilities enter the legal profession and add their diverse voices to our justice system.
On this Veterans Day, as we salute those who serve or have served, we want to share Valentina’s story as an example of how military enlistment can play a vital role in achieving a law degree — and, in turn, help diversify the legal profession and make justice accessible for all.
